Bucket hats: the subtle art of being in and out of fashion, simultaneously
One of the accessories pushed by the fashion world this year were the bucket hats. Interestingly, they didn't really reach the mass market, at least where I live. On the other hand, I saw them in nearly every store in Beijing. But the thing is, as I've noticed, in Asia bucket hats are always "in", if not among the youth, then among grandmas 😅.
So far, in the West I only saw models and "instagram influencers" wearing them.
So, my question is - are bucket hats a failed fad or a trend that is just taking off? Will they be all over the place in the next year or two or will they disappear back into the abyss of tourist attire? Hard to tell. In my personal opinion, they have the chance of creeping into the wardrobes of "mere mortals", but mostly in the US... and nearby countries (I'm looking at you, Canada). As for Europe, I doubt that they will be much popular - "tourist wear" at most.
Now, my view on bucket hats may seem biased. And it is. I have a very special "love-hate" relationship with those. Have you ever hated something so much, that you actually like it? That's me with buckets.
Fun fact - bucket hats happen to share this unique feature with another type of hats - the cloche. "Coincidentally", they also happen to look similar (at least to me).
These bell-shaped, "head-hugging" hats were extremely popular in the 1920s and, as much as I know, didn't return into fashion ever since (correct me if I'm wrong, 'cause my knowledge on 20th century fashion is not as deep as that of the previous centuries). But, then again, I'm hella biased because 1920s are my least favourite fashion era, closely followed by empire.
OK, let's go back to our sheep. Are bucket hats "in"? In the West - not yet, in the East - totally. Will they remain fashionable? Probably not for too long. Will they have a comeback after this wave passes? For sure, but after a cold, "hideous" phase. Should you buy one? If you like it and it suits you, sure 😁.
